Lauren Cheshire retires from football

Club captain Lauren Cheshire calls time on her playing career.

Lauren Cheshire has confirmed her decision to retire from football following the injury to her arm back in February 2023.

Cheshire has been a familiar face in the women's game across two decades and has played for a plethora of clubs across the south coast.

The full-back made 232 appearances at National League level over 11 seasons for Brighton & Hove Albion, Chichester City and Southampton Women's FC.

Cheshire gave her all in every game she played, she was a fierce opponent and a loyal teammate at every club she played for while also winning promotions and cup finals over the years.

She joined Southampton back in the summer of 2019 and has gone on to make 63 appearances.

The defender was named captain that same season and has led the line ever since.

She was part of the squad that reached the Fourth Round of the Women's FA Cup and the FA Women's National League Plate Semi-Final.

While Cheshire has hung up her boots she won't be leaving women's football or Southampton.

She has agreed to join the Committee to continue working on the development of the club and additionally, she will look to complete her coaching badges with us.

As she looks to become a qualified football coach Cheshire has accepted Jamie Lloyd Davies' offer to become First Team Coach.

The Southampton Women's Committee said: "Lauren Cheshire has been an amazing person and player to have at the club and no one could ever fault her commitment.

"It is truly heartbreaking that we will never see Cheshire play football again and that it wasn't ended on her own terms.

"She has been an inspiration to anyone that has watched her play and has overcome many obstacles to get to where she is today.

"While we won't see her play we are delighted that Lauren will remain at Southampton as she has joined the Committee and will look to complete her coaching badges while at the club."
