The Sirens leave it late as they reach the Second Round of the Women’s FA Cup

Summer Kilby scored a 120th-minute winner to send Southampton Women’s FC through to the next round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup with a 2-1 win over Ebbsfleet United.

The hosts took the lead through Amy Russ before Rachel Okoro equalised in the second-half taking the game to extra-time.

There was late drama as Jasmine Nassar was sent off before a composed finish from Kilby sent the team through.

Southampton started well utilising both wings and getting Gabri Tchuenkam and Okoro on the ball.

Sian Wylie led the line and curled a shot wide before the returning Britt Jeal volleyed over Laura Vokes’ cross.

There were a few half chances for the Sirens, Chloe Tucker sent a long ball over the defence for Wylie but the forward’s shot was saved by the goalkeeper.

With Southampton not taking their chances, Ebbsfleet grew into the game.

Vokes put her body on the line just past the half-hour mark but four minutes late the deadlock was broken.

Ebbsfleet got the break as Chloe Francis drove down the wing to fire the cross into the middle where Russ got in front of Nassar to chest home the opener.

More chances came for both sides but neither managed to test either keeper with Emma Whitlock and Wylie missing good opportunities to level before the break.

Both teams came out fighting in the second-half but lacked the quality to cause a problem in the box.

Okoro and Jeal had chances, the Fleet keeper parrying the wingers before the latter just failed to connect with Tchuenkam’s low cross.

Hope Suominen returned as she came on to replace Tchuenkam and had an immediate impact with the lively footwork causing problems for the Ebbsfleet backline.

With 66 minutes on the clock, the Sirens were given an opening as Okoro was fouled outside the box and Shannon Sievwright stepped up to take the free-kick.

The former Portsmouth midfielder sailed the ball into the box for Tucker to knock it down for Okoro to slam home the equaliser.

Substitute Suominen went close on a couple of occasions firstly denied by a great block by the keeper before she fired wide minutes later.

Sirens keeper Ellie Parker had been the hero in the previous round and did it again as she denied United twice within 30 seconds.

She first timed her run to block the striker to perfection before she tipped over a stunning strike from Russ that looked destined for the top corner to keep her side in the contest.

Both sides had chances to win the game as Okoro headed wide and Ebbsfleet saw a shot fly over the Southampton goal.

As the light faded the fog crept in creating a daunting atmosphere at the Kuflink Stadium with 30 minutes to decide the outcome of the match.

The first-half saw few clear cut opportunities for either side although Aaron Smith was forced into a change to bring on Summer Kilby for Tucker, it was the final 15 minutes that would produce the drama.

Ebbsfleet broke through the Southampton defence charging towards goal with three defenders in chase but Nassar fouled the striker just outside the area and was given her marching orders just two minutes into the second-half of extra-time.

Despite being a player down the Sirens battled on Ebbsfleet’s captain, Dan Carlton, who rattled the crossbar in the 114th minute.

With just minutes on the clock, an opportunity came knocking for Southampton when Vokes was wiped out on the left-hand side.

Whitlock stepped up to take it, whipping the ball into the box.

Substitute Katie Kingshott had her shot blocked and it fell to Kilby who composed herself to fire home in the 120th minute what looked to be the winner.

With just a couple of minutes, the Sirens held on for the win to head into the FA Cup Second Round where they will host London Bees.
